GCR/LNER/BR D11/1 and D11/2
GCR/LNER/BR D11/1 and D11/2
Designed in 1911 by Robinson of the Great Central Railway for express passenger work between Manchester and London (Marylebone) via Sheffield.
The locomotives classed D11, by the LNER, spent their later lives between Manchester Central and Chester & Liverpool Central.
In 1924 there was a need for a batch of 4-4-0 locomotives for use on the ex North British lines radiating from Edinburgh.
Gresley used the design to create the D11/2 which had a reduced height cab, chimney and boiler fittings to operate under the more restricted loading gauge in Scotland.
BR Number series 62660-62670 (D11/1) and 62671-62694 (D11/2).
The last locomotive was withdrawn from BR stock in 1962.
One has been preserved.
The file has been updated to the new functions.
