LBSCR/SR/BR H1 & H2 (Marsh Atlantics)

LBSCR/SR/BR H1 & H2 (Marsh Atlantics)

The London Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR) in 1912 had a need for a heavier express locomotive to cope with increasing passenger numbers and hence longer heavier trains between London and Brighton/Newhaven.
Marsh, who had been assistant to Ivatt on the Great Northern Railway, designed the locomotives which had a great deal of similarity to the GNR’s Atlantics.
The locomotives were built at Kitsons in Leeds and entered service in 1906.
One ‘Hartland Point’ was used by Bulleid to experiment with sleeve valves which were later to be used in the ‘Leader’ Class of locomotives.
A similar Class of Locomotives the H2s were a development of the H1 design with superheated boilers and a straightened running plate.

BR number series between 32037-32039 (Class H1) and 32421-32426 (Class H2)
Last locomotive of Class H1 withdrawn 1951 and Class H2 1958.
None have been preserved but The Bluebell Railway is building a replica of the H2 Class.
