GWR/BR 5400 Class
GWR/BR 5400 Class
Built from 1931-1935 these Collett designed 0-6-0 Pannier Tanks were a 5ft 2 in wheeled class for working auto-trains.
They were used on the more lightly graded branches than the 6400 class which were built with slightly smaller wheels for working the more steeply graded branch lines.
They could be found between London, Exeter, Fishguard and Oswestry.
The principle of auto-train working is briefly having a driving cab in a coach allowing driver to control basic driving functions remotely.
The operation of auto-trains dispensed with the need to run the locomotive around to the other end of the train at terminating points of the trains journey.
When driven from the auto-trailer cab the driver had control of the regulator, could set the brakes, had a warning gong.
Trailers were also fitted with AWS (Automatic Warning System bell and horn).
There was also a handbrake and buzzer or bell system to communicate with the fireman (who remained on the locomotive) and the guard.
