J & A Brown Richmond Vale Railway ex WW1 ROD 2-8-0
Robinson of the Great Central Railway designed a 2-8-0 heavy freight locomotive in 1911, the purpose of which was to haul heavy freight and mineral trains on the railway mostly from Collieries in the South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire coalfields to industry in the area and Manchester/London.
A quantity of 130 were built for that railway up to 1920, with a further 15 added afterwards.
In WW1 the design was adopted by the Railway Operating Division (ROD) of the Royal Engineers who ordered 521 locomotives, built by North British, Robert Stephenson & the GCR, between 1917 and the 1920s.
After the war the locomotives surplus to military requirements were offered for sale some 423 being sold to British Mainline Railways, including the LNWR, GCR (LNER), & GWR.
46 were sold to China and 13 to J & A Brown for use in their Richmond Vale Railway colliery system.
They were used to haul coal trains from their collieries at Stockrington Minmi, Richmond Main and Pelaw Main to the New South Wales Government Railway at Hexham.
The O4s were last used in 1972 being replaced by Beyer Peacock 2-8-2 Tank locos displaced from the South Maitland railway.
The railway was the last private company owned user of steam locomotives in Australia, the last steam operation was in 1987.
Locomotive numbers 12-24.
The last locomotive was withdrawn from Brown’s stock in 1973.
Three have been preserved.
