NSW Class C38 4-6-2 Locomotive
NSW Class C38 4-6-2 Locomotive.
In 1939 New South Wales Government Railways ordered five 38 Class locomotives of the Pacific, or 4-6-2 wheel arrangement, from Clyde Engineering.
There were many delays in construction caused by shortages in WW11 the last of the 5 being completed in 1945.
Those 5 had bullet fronts to the smokebox similar to the Indian Class WP and the American New York Central J3A.
Subsequently a further 25 were built up to 1949 with standard smokebox fronts.
The locomotives were used on passenger services between Sydney and Port Kembla, Albury, Dubbo, Maitland and Brisbane but due to track problems Brisbane was dropped from their route availability.
Number series 3801-3805 (bullet front) and 3806-3830.
Last locomotive withdrawn December 1970.
Four have been preserved.
