GWR/BR 3031/Achilles Class Dean Single

GWR/BR 3031/Achilles Class Dean Single
The introduction of this class had a very interesting history.
In 1891 30 2-2-2 locomotives were built by William Dean numbered 3001-3030 (The 3001 Class).
The first eight locos being built as broad gauge convertibles.
In 1892 at the end of broad gauge running the eight were converted to standard gauge.
Due to an accident in 1893 when the front axle broke due to excessive weight, therefore, in 1894 the decision was taken to replace the leading axle with a bogie.
All of the class were so treated.
A further 50 new builds were afterwards added to the fleet.
Used primarily on West of England expresses out of Paddington, the class although fast were not capable of drawing the increasingly heavy trains and between 1908 and 1915 the entire class was withdrawn.
