MR/LMS/BR 1P Tank (Johnson 1532 Class)

MR/LMS/BR 1P Tank (Johnson 1532 Class)
In 1875 Johnson of the Midland Railway produced a batch of 10 0-4-4T locomotives with 5ft 7in driving wheels for branch line passenger use.
A further batch of 195 were built with modifications such as higher boiler pressure and smaller driving wheels of 5ft 4 in.
The production dates of all these engines lasted from 1875 up until 1900.
Various boilers were fitted, round topped fireboxes with different safety valves and also flat topped Belpaire fireboxes.
Other differences between members of the class would include Push Pull equipment fitted to a number and some with Condensing apparatus.
Designed to work on branch passenger trains the locos could get up a fair turn of speed often being clocked whilst out on the main line between Bradford and Leeds at 65mph.
Their more usual haunts as mentioned were on the numerous Midland Railway branches from Highbridge, Bristol, Gloucester, Derby, Bradford, Leeds, Nottingham and London.
56 were left to be taken into BR stock together with 9 of the 5ft 7in variety.

BR number series between 58039-58091
The last locomotive was withdrawn in 1960.
