Rushton & Hornsby PWM 650-654 0-6-0 Shunter.
Rushton & Hornsby PWM 650-654 0-6-0 Shunter.
In 1953 BR purchased a single shunter from Rushton & Hornsby of Lincoln for use by the Permanent Way Department.
Numbered PWM650 (Permanent Way Machines).
In 1959 a further 4 were purchased being numbered PWM651- PWM654.
They were all used by the Western Region working out of various locations Reading, Gloucester, Radyr, Swindon, Taunton, Plymouth and Worcester.
Unusually for a BR shunter they were Diesel Electrics not Diesel Mechanical as most of the other small shunters were.
Originally painted green with red buffer-beams they soon were given wasp stripes at the front and back. Liveries later changed to BR Blue then later Civil Engineering Dept Yellow.
With the privatisation of BR they were made redundant but 2 survived long enough to become EWS property.
The first was withdrawn in 1987 the last in 1998
BR Number series PWM650-PWM654 (later renumbered 97650-97954)
3 have passed on into preservation.
