GWR 49xx Hall

GWR/BR 49xx Hall
A development of the Saint Class these 4-6-0 engines designed by Collett were created to fill the need of the Great Western for a Mixed Traffic locomotive.
In fact the first locomotive introduced in 1924 was a rebuild of a ‘Saint' class locomotive after trials production of new locomotives commenced in 1928.
The locomotives could be found on a variety of duties sometimes even stepping in when a Castle class was unavailable.
In 1944 a need for further locomotives lead to a development by Hawksworth which had modified frames, bogies and boiler with greater superheated surfaces.
