Pressed Steel Co. Class 117
Pressed Steel Co. Class 117
Coupling code Blue Square.
Introduced in 1959 these three car units built by Pressed Steel Co. were intended for suburban work on the Western Region and had high density seating.
With no gangways for inter coach connection and no toilets in the outer power cars together with the inability for the guard to check/issue tickets the units were, therefore, later fitted with corridor connections between coaches.
There were two toilets in the centre car which also included first class accommodation.
The driving cars were powered by 2 BUT(Leyland) 150hp horizontal 6-cylinder engines.
One of the driving cars also had accommodation for the guard.
These 42 three car units although unpopular due to their high-density seating outlasted many other first generation DMUs.
Due to being late withdrawals from BR service over 50 individual cars passed into preservation.
Some of the preserved centre trailer cars are used as locomotive hauled stock.
