L&NWR/LMS/BR 2F Coal Tank
300 of this class were built between 1881 and 1897 to the design of Webb.
64 survived to enter BR service but of these only 26 wore their BR numbers.
The origin of the class can be traced back to1873 when Webb introduced his 0-6-0 locomotive for general freight work, the Coal Tanks being tank engine versions of the locomotive with lengthened frames and the addition of a pony wheel to accommodate the bunker.
Their original sphere of operation area was all over the ex LNWR lines from London to Abergavenny, Holyhead, Carlisle and Huddersfield some of which were even fitted with auto-train equipment for push pull work on branch passenger trains.
BR number series between 58880-58937
The last locomotive was withdrawn in 1958.
