LNER/BR A4
LNER/BR A4
Produced between 1935 and1938 these Gresley designed Pacific (4-6-2) locomotives were built for the fastest trains from Kings Cross (London) to Yorkshire and Scotland.
Originally having full streamlining the side valances covering the driving wheels and motion were removed exposing the valve gear to assist with maintenance.
35 were built but one was destroyed in an attack on York during WWII.
Some of the locomotives were fitted with a corridor tender to allow crew changes on Kings Cross to Edinburgh non-stop runs.
60022 Mallard holds the world speed record for a steam locomotive 126.5 mph.
Under BR ownership the locomotives were initially given power class 7P, this was upgraded to 8P in 1951.
BR number series 60001-60034
Last Locomotive withdrawn in 1966
6 have been preserved.
The A4 sounds have been recorded from the prototype.
