Class 153 Single Unit ‘Bubble Car’
Class 153 Single Unit ‘Bubble Car’
British Rail found a need for a single unit railcar to work lightly loaded lines more economically than having a two-car unit, they therefore looked at their current stock and decided to rebuild some class 155 units.
Leyland Bus Workington built Class 155 2 car sets in 1988 which seemed the most likely candidates for conversion.
The contract for conversion was given to Hunslet-Barclay, Kilmarnock who installed a cab at the ‘blunt’ end.
The single car units have a Cummins NT855R5 engine rated at 285hp with a Voith hydraulic drive.
No. Series 153301-153385.
The class 153sounds have been recorded from the prototype.
