Motor Rail Simplex 20Hp and 40HP
Motor Rail Simplex 20Hp and 40HP
The Motor Rail and Tramcar Company was formed in 1911 to produce narrow gauge locomotives. Moving forward to 1916 the company tendered the War Department to supply locos with a gauge of just over 1ft 11½ inch to haul 15 tons at 5MPH.
The tender was successful and lead to three types of units to be delivered, Open, Protected and Armoured.
Open type with an armoured end and adjustable roof.
Protected type the same as open but with side doors and visors.
Armoured type which was totally enclosed with narrow slits for driver visibility.
900 were produced either with 20hp for the open version or 40hp petrol engines supplied by W. H. Dorman & Co.
After the war many were repatriated and found work in industrial areas, quarries and mines, many have been preserved.
