The most numerous locomotives on the North British Railway, built between 1888 and 1900 these Holmes designed locomotives would be the maids of all work on the railway.
During the First World War twenty five of the class were sent overseas and a number later received relevant names.
Later on in LNER & BR days the locomotives were used mostly on Goods trains but would on special occasions be found on excursion trains.
In BR days they were shedded from Carlisle to Aberdeen and Blaydon to Fort William.
Two locomotives 65285 and 65287 had cut down cabs and boiler fittings for working the Gartsherrie to Glenbeigh branch.
BR Number series 65210-65346.
Last locomotive withdrawn 1967.
