Midland/LMS/BR 4F 0-6-0
When in 1911 the Midland Railway required a more powerful freight locomotive Fowler designed an enlarged version of the already proven 3F designed by Deeley.
192 examples were built by the Midland Railway, then after the grouping a further 5 were built for the Somerset and Dorset Railway and 575 for the LMS.
The design became the standard LMS freight loco with production running up to 1940.
There were minor detail differences between the pre and post grouping engines, notably the dome and chimney shape.
Used by the LMS generally on freight trains the locomotives had an operating range between Scotland, Leeds, London, Bournemouth,Swansea and Holyhead.
They could be found mostly on freight then only occasionally, on passenger workings on Summer Saturdays.
