GWR/BR 43xx
GWR/BR 4300 Class
Built between 1911 and 1932 these Churchward designed locomotives used parts which were generally interchangeable with many other GWR locomotives.
They could be considered as tender versions of the 3150 class 2-6-2T locomotives.
The last 20 to be built had modified cabs with side windows.
Some locomotives were modified with additional buffer beam weights and numbered in the 83xx and 93xx series, all were returned to their original condition and numbers when passing through the works.
Between 1936 and 1939 one hundred of the class were withdrawn for their parts to be used in the construction of the Grange 6800 and Manor 7800 classes, their wheels and motion together with other parts were used in the rebuild.
The 4300 class could be found all over the GWR territory on freight, passenger, milk and parcels trains.
BR Number series 4303-4386, 5300-5399, 6300-6399 and 7300-7341.
The ones with additional weights were numbered 8393 and 9300-9319 in early BR days before reverting to the original number series.
Last locomotive withdrawn 1964.
