GWR 61xx
GWR/BR 61xx
The 61XX series of Prairie Tank locomotives designed by Collett and built from 1931-1935 were a heavier version of the 5101 class with increased boiler designed specifically for working the suburban services from Paddington.
As time moved on the class spread their wings as far as Plymouth, Neyland, Bristol, Birmingham, Oxford Exeter etc.
Under BR the locomotives were allocated power class 4MT later upgraded to 5MT in 1953.
Outwardly the class could only be distinguished by their number the similarity to the 5101 being dimensionally the same.
BR number series 6100-6169
Last Locomotive withdrawn in 1966.
