GWR 52xx

GWR/BR 5200 Class
Churchward developed the 2-8-0T 28XX class of locomotives in 1910 for mineral traffic in the South Wales Valleys.
Collett, Churchward's successor, modified the design and introduced the 5204 class in 1923 which continued in production up until 1940.
The 2 classes were very similar apart from the 5204 class had slightly enlarged cylinders and outside steam pipes.
The locomotives were classified as power class 8F by BR and spent their entire lives on heavy freight trains and could be found shedded between Newport and Llanelly with a few straying to Bristol, Hereford and Wourcester.
From 1934-1937 some locomotives of the 4200 and 5205 class were rebuilt into 2-8-2 Tank locomotives to increase their range with larger fuel bunkers.
The rebuilds were named 7200 Class.
