LMS Fowler Garratt
LMS/BR Fowler Garratt
On the Midland main line between Toton and Brent it was the custom to use two 0-6-0 locomotives on the heavy coal trains.
This proving costly in terms of man hours so an alternative was sought.
The LMS after considering various alternatives decided on the Garratt type to cover the service.
A Garratt locomotive is one in which the cab boiler and smokebox are carried on a frame which in turn rests on two engine chassis containing the wheels cylinders and water tanks (the rear one also contains the coal bunker).
